How to Read Support and Resistance: A 5-Minute Beginner's Guide to Key Levels

The two words traders use most are support and resistance. They are not secret indicators. They answer two simple questions: where does price tend to stop falling, and where does it tend to stall?

What are support and resistance?

  • Support: an area below the price where it has bounced several times before. Buyers usually step in here
  • Resistance: an area above the price where it has failed to break higher several times. Sellers usually step in here

Think of them as a floor and a ceiling. Price moves between them, tends to bounce off the floor and tends to get pushed down from the ceiling.

How do you find them?

  1. Mark the previous highs and lows: the obvious peaks and troughs on the chart are the most basic resistance and support
  2. Count the touches: the more often an area has been tested, the more traders watch it and the more useful it is
  3. Watch round numbers: levels like 4000 or 4100 in gold are where many orders sit
  4. Treat it as a zone: price rarely stops at the exact same price, so a zone works better than a single line

Breakouts and fake breakouts

  • Real breakout: price closes above resistance (or below support) and holds when it comes back to test it
  • Fake breakout: price pokes through during the session but quickly closes back inside the range

The safer approach is to wait for the close, or wait for the retest after a breakout, instead of chasing the first move through the level.

Broken support becomes resistance

Once support breaks, price often finds resistance at the same level when it bounces back. The same goes the other way: broken resistance often becomes new support. This role reversal is one of the most common ways traders find entries.

How to use it when trading

  • Look for buying opportunities near support, with the stop loss below it
  • Look for selling opportunities near resistance, with the stop loss above it
  • When price sits in the middle of the range, risk and reward are hard to define, so it is fine to wait
