Stop Loss Types: Fixed, ATR and Trailing | Borearis
There is no single best stop. The type should match the setup and the volatility.
Fixed
A set number of pips or points. Simple, but too tight in volatile weeks and too wide in quiet ones.
ATR
The stop sits a multiple of average range away. It scales with volatility and keeps the trade room to breathe. See the ATR stop calculator.
Trailing
The stop follows price in the trade's favour, locking in gains. It works in trends and gets whipsawed in ranges.
Structural
The stop sits beyond a swing or a level. It respects the chart, but the distance can be wide; size down accordingly.
Whatever you choose, keep risk fixed with the position size calculator.
Which stop is best for beginners?
A structural stop with ATR as a sanity check is a reasonable default.
Should I move my stop to break even?
Only after the trade has room; moving too early gets you stopped by noise.
