Close vs Wick: Which One Confirms a Breakout | Borearis
A wick shows an attempt; a close shows a decision. Most false breakouts die at the close.
Why the close matters
A price can trade beyond a level for minutes and still finish back inside the range. The closing price is the value the market agreed on for that period.
How to apply it
- Treat a level as broken only when a candle closes beyond it.
- Wicks beyond the level are liquidity, not confirmation.
- A close back inside means the range still owns price.
The cost of waiting
Waiting for the close means giving up a few pips of entry. It also avoids the majority of fake breaks, which is usually the better trade-off.

Should I ever enter on a wick?
Only with a clear rejection signal and a defined stop; the close is the safer confirmation.
Does a close beyond a level guarantee continuation?
No. It improves the odds, but follow-through still matters.
